UPDATE 5/29: Mayor Steve Schewel will join us for this event, and will speak at 5:45 p.m. Come join us in thanking him for his support for community soccer development!

This is our fourth year organizing futsal games in Durham. Since we, Kosta Harlan and David Fellerath, started this in 2015, we have met many remarkable people, united in their love for kicking around a small ball. It's truly been a pleasure.

Now it is time for us to embark on bigger ventures. This summer, we are hosting our first summer youth futsal academy. You can help make this venture a reality by joining us at American Tobacco’s The Cage on June 5, from 5:30-7:30pm.

We will raise funds to support a youth academy that will run in July at C.C. Spaulding Elementary School. The academy will serve children aged 5-10. It will run Mondays-Thursdays in the morning, with younger children served from 8:30-10:00 a.m., and older children from 10:15-11:45 a.m.

The “pilot” part is something we’re very excited about. We will work with a small group of teen interns to teach them to be soccer coaches. They will be trained under the curriculum established by the United States Soccer Federation grassroots coaching license program.

By using teen coaches to work with younger children, we hope to tackle one of the biggest challenges in recreational soccer: the lack of trained coaches. The pilot program manager is Jon Bloom, an avid soccer player and parent. The academy technical manager is Rob Weldon, a DPS teacher, avid soccer player, and certified USSF soccer coach.

We are very excited about our fundraiser. The suggested donation is $20, and there will be an open bar, raffle, and games (bring your kids). If you want to stick around after the event, you can watch some regularly scheduled futsal that begins at 8 p.m.

We have received wonderful support from the business community. SOCCER.COM has donated shirts for the campers and coaches, and raffle items, too. Tobacco Road FC has donated tickets for the raffle. We have also received raffle items from such businesses as The Durham Hotel and Everyday Magic, and we will announce more soon!

This is an important time for Durham Atletico. We have long wanted to find ways to have a lasting impact on the Durham community. We want to make quality urban soccer available at affordable prices, and we want to work to improve urban playing spaces. As part of our effort to expand playing opportunities, we have been offering programs for children. In cooperation with Durham Parks and Recreation, we have done informal programs at W.D. Hill Recreation Center and Lyon Park. Currently, we have a U6 futsal program, led by Kosta, on Saturday mornings at W.D. Hill Recreation Center. We are also looking to create after-school programming for young teens (13-15, approximately).

If you would like to help, you can visit the website of our fiscal sponsor, Durham Parks Foundation, or you can email us at info@durhamatletico.com. If you are interested in signing up your child for the academy, visit this page or write academy@durhamatletico.com.

We have been fortunate to have partnerships with Durham Parks and Recreation, Durham Public Schools, the Durham YMCA, and American Tobacco.

We are incredibly grateful for our ongoing support from JD Service Now, a plumbing, heating, and air conditioning company that has been our primary sponsor since 2016.

Thank you for everything you have done to help Durham Atletico succeed!
