This is our fourth year organizing futsal games in Durham. Since we, Kosta Harlan and David Fellerath, started this in 2015, we have met many remarkable people, united in their love for kicking around a small ball.
Did you know that Durham Atletico has a nonprofit fiscal sponsor? We do, and this means you can make contributions that may be tax-deductible.
Yesterday we learned that Durham City Manager Thomas Bonfield has made a recommendation that will significantly advance Durham's soccer field capacity.
In his recommended budget for fiscal year 2018-2019, he has advised the allocation of $9 million in capital improvemnent funds for the development of a site in East Durham, located on Hoover Road near the Wheels skate park. The property is large enough for approximately four full-size fields.
We're finally open for spring! We're having another outdoor soccer league, which starts soon. The league is a recreational one, intended to be accessible for people of varying skill levels. It's 8v8, with no slide tackling and no enforcement of the offside rule. Games are 70 minutes long, and we will play on the grass fields at Snow Hill Road Park in north Durham.
Thanks for your interest – registration is closed. You may email to be placed on the waitlist.
Durham Atlético is hosting a free, 8 week futsal/soccer program for children under 6. (Children must be over 3 years old and under 6 to participate.) The program will take place every Saturday morning from 9 AM to 10 AM at WD Hill, for 8 weeks, starting on March 3.
It's hard to call off games due to weather. Most of us love to play so much that we'll endure rain, cold, snow or extreme heat in order to play the game we love.
Futsal outdoors poses special challenges because moisture can linger on surfaces even when the sun is shining and temperatures are mild. The plastic tiles that we play on at The Cage provide a good surface when they are dry, but they are nasty and treacherous when wet. A situation that is particularly hard to judge is when the court appears to be dry, but there is also a significant amount of moisture in the air.
The schedule is up for the opening week and we'll be adding the rest of the schedule shortly.
Please note that we will typically have games at two locations on the same night, so it's crucial to look at the venue carefully. This season we have four:
We're closing in on the finish of a great season. It's been wonderful playing with old friends and, as always, making new ones.
The finals will be held at W.D. Hill Recreation Center, from 6-9 p.m. Afterward, we will meet at Ponysaurus for celebrations and awards. The schedule is as follows:
Welcome back to those who have played futsal with us before and hello to all the newcomers! We didn't run a tournament/season over the summer but we've been keeping busy all the same. Here are some of the things we've been up to:
